i’ll die on this hill: the ability to explain a complex subject in accessible terms is one of the greatest markers of intelligence we have

I only half-jokingly ask for this & try to do it myself. You’re so right…and if you’re unable to make it understandable, you probably don’t quite get it yourself

It requires both knowledge and empathy, a rare combination

why is this a rare combination? the two aren’t mutually exclusive, by virtue of knowledge does one not have empathy? curious, is all

The ability to explain a complex subject in accessible terms is a marker of true understanding of that subject.

But to explain it to non-experts requires grasping of many concepts.

Best financial advice I ever received was, "If someone can't explain how an investment makes money, simply and in less than a minute. Walk away."

Agree! Glad I read and took to heart this quote from Kurt Vonnegut's CAT'S CRADLE in high school- "Dr. Hoenikker used to say that any scientist who couldn't explain to an eight-year-old what he was doing was a charlatan."

I say this when I teach stats!! I say to my students “you will hate when I do this, but if you give me an answer from the reading I’m going to ask you to say it again in plain language bc once you have that figured out you’ll really understand the concept”. And they learn!

that's awesome because i really struggle with stats and i need it to be broken down for me in 5th grader language. good on you👍🥰
